Rhythm
Up to now the emphasis has been on the sound of the notes. We need to make sure we know the "maths" now. The 2 notes with the box around them get 2 beats when added together. The 1st note (with the dot after it) gets1 and a half beats, the 2nd one (with the little tail on top) gets half a beat.
Remember 4/4 means 4 beats in each bar. 3/4 means 3 beats in each bar.
For Junior Cert' we compose 4 bar rhythms. Make sure to end on a long note and have the correct number of beats in each bar.

We learn several different aspects of pitch.
We learn several different aspects of pitch.
- The letter names of notes as we write them on lines and spaces.
- The Scale of C on as we write it using notation
- The Scale of C on the Piano, calling notes by their letter names.
- The same scale calling notes by their tonic solfa names.

Classroom Pitch chart
Note that the diagram is like a stairs. "Do" is the lowest step, "Re" is up 1 step. "Me" is up another step and so on. Going from step to step like this is called Step Movement i.e. not skipping any notes.
Activity
Play the notes of the scale of C on a keyboard/piano, calling them by their letter names and by their tonic solfa names.
Randomly pick out notes from the scale, play them and call them by both names.
Try to work out the notes of simple familiar tunes, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Row Your Boat, starting on C (Doh)
Combine in groups using Boomwhackers to play the same tunes. Note the colours of the Boomwhackers are the same as the colour coded chart above.
